Hollow Knight tells the story of Hallownest, a once-great underground kingdom of insects that fell to a supernatural infection caused by the Radiance, an ancient moth-like deity whose influence drove bugs into madness. To stop this plague, the Pale King—a higher being who once ruled Hallownest—created the Vessels, emotionless beings born from the Void, hoping one could contain the Radiance forever. The player controls the Knight, one of these discarded Vessels, who returns to the ruined kingdom long after its collapse. As the Knight explores Hallownest’s remnants, they uncover the truth about the Radiance, the Pale King’s failed plan, and the tragic fate of the Hollow Knight, the Vessel chosen to seal the infection but ultimately corrupted. The Knight’s journey leads to confronting the Radiance itself, offering a chance to either repeat the cycle or finally end the kingdom’s suffering.
